A lovely trip to Sainsburys sees me perusing the sandwich aisle again, only to pick out what looks like a promising Christmas sandwich, £2 on it’s own and £3 as part of a meal deal. The marketing upsell always works on me, another smoothie and some vegetable crisps and I’m out of there.

First impressions are good, packaging is nice and Christmassy but look into the wonderful window of joy and the sandwich is looking a little gaunt. Crack open the packaging to take a peek and it appears my deepest fears are true, the sandwich is looking a bit thin. I opened up the sandwich to reveal … **drum roll please ** … well not much unfortunately. The filling content was not very deep and certainly not very wide, with lots of the edges bare – not even the sauce made it that far. I decided to venture on with the tasting, trying to forget about the lack of filling – reminding myself that sometimes good things come in small packages.

So how did it taste? Well to put it bluntly not great, I think largely due to the turkey being wafer thin sheets of reconstituted turkey. Oh dear Sainsburys, fobbing us off with reformed turkey when Tesco’s and Morrisons offered lovely turkey breast meat. So sadly that made me feel about 7 years old with my packed lunch at school. Then there was lack of anything else in the sandwich, it said bacon but they were small little bacon bits – almost like the toppings you put on salads. Unfortunately you couldn’t taste the bacon at all. Then the cranberry sauce, usually the thing that brings it all together, but sadly there wasn’t much of it and the wafer thin smoked turkey kind of overpowered it. Also no stuffing, Christmas with no stuffing?? So unfortunately, not a great Christmassy flavour, but if you want a smoked turkey sandwich to help you reminisce about your primary school days then this sandwich is for you!

So what score did it get?

Value – 7/10

Content – 4/10

Christmas Feel & Taste – 5/10

Overall Taste – 4/10

GRAND TOTAL – 5/10

I’d have expected better from Sainsburys usually very good quality food, when all you can say that you enjoyed was the bread & the other meal deal items (who doesn’t like Tyrells vegetable crisps? yum!) you know there’s an issue.

So that’s our score, but more importantly how would you rate it? Get involved, taste it and then rate it and let the leaders board competition begin.
